Premiers get win in first home game
Our Premiers have opened their Swindale Shield account with a scrappy win over Wellington at Evans Bay Park. In the early game our Premier Reserves earned a resounding victory to stay perfect after two rounds.
In the Swindale Shield match our Premiers controlled the early ball and took a lead of 3-0 by the boot of Andrew Wells, but it was Wellington who crossed the line first after 15 minutes. It didn't take long for the Red Machine to strike back with impressive young flanker Tom Horan scoring his first Premier try just minutes later (video below).
Struggling to win our own lineout ball, momentum for the home side was regularly lost. However on halftime, repeated waves of attack on the Axemen line eventually saw Matt Peni score to take a 15-13 lead into the break.
As the rain set in, the first 20 minutes of the second half became a bit of an arm-wrestle. The MSP coaches made a raft of changes from the bench which added some needed energy. James Tuia completed finished a strong run from the back of an attacking scrum to edge the home side ahead.
Our side will be disappointed not to have found a fourth try bonus point and will be looking for a more polished performance against Wainuiomata next weekend against a side buoyed by an upset over OBU.
