Colts off to a strong start

MSP's under-21 side are unbeaten after three games in the colts division 1, with coach Mason Lawrence saying it's gratifying to see the mix of players getting into their stride so early in the season.

"There's good competiton for places and good depth in the team," says Mason, who's in his first year coaching at MSP. Colts centre Aleni PuaThe 26-strong squad has a core of St Pat's Town players supplemented by some excellent talent from other schools. The captain and no 8 Jacob Rikihana, a Wellington under-18 rep last year, is from Newlands College, as is big prop Hamia Uluki.

Three players from Viard College - Lorenzo Lolesio, Craighan Moko, and Va'a Asomua - have also made a strong impact. Centre Aleni Pua (pictured left), a former MSP junior, was in the Rongotai College 1st XV last year.

The loosies have been outstanding, Mason says. They include blindside Paul Churchman, no 7 Cory Lawrence and Mau Apollo, one of several Apollo brothers who have played for the club in recent years. Several players have returned from last year's colts, including lock Sean Bridge who scored a hat-trick against Wainui in a pre-season game.

This Saturday the colts take on Hutt Old Boys Marist against whom they had a hard-fought win in the grading games.
