St Patrick’s College in Wellington celebrated its 125th Jubilee in 2010 as New Zealand’s oldest Catholic secondary school. It has around 800 boys and a proud sporting tradition. St Patrick's is the 2013 holder of the presitigious McEvedy Shield for inter-college athletics.
Two SPC old boys have captained the All Blacks - Maurice Brownlie in 1928 and Jerry Collins in 2006. Seventeen old boys have played for the All Blacks. Two 2012 old-boys, Matt Proctor and Eric Sione have been selected for the 2013 Super 15 Hurricanes team.
In 2010, the SPC first XV were joint winners of the Wellington Premier 1 Division for secondary school rugby, and runners-up in the Premier 1 trophy. The team was a Premier 1 semi-finalist in 2011 and 2012. In 2011, SPC's 3XV were Premier 5 champions. In 2012, the U15A and U55A teams were Division 1 champions.
Two SPC players were picked for the Wellington U18 representative squad in 2011, six were picked for the Wellington U16 representative teams, and one was selected in the Wellington Rugby High Performance Group.
We have organised our teams into premier, development and club selections, and our goal is to become a dominant force in Wellington secondary school rugby.
The St Patrick’s College Football Club formally became a member of the Wellington Rugby Football Union on 26 March 1886, with Messrs Saunders and McMahon the first club delegates to the Union. Along with the Petone and Poneke Clubs, St. Patrick's is one of the three oldest surviving rugby clubs in Wellington.
The College has always had a strong association with Marist St Pats rugby. The Old Boys section of the St Patrick’s College Football Club merged with the Marist Brothers Old Boys Club in 1971 to form Marist St Pats.
