Premiers qualify second for Jubilee Cup playoffs

Our Premier Men beat Wellington by 54-12 to finish the Swindale Shield round tied for first place on competition points, but losing the tiebreaker so finishing in second place.

The game against Wellington was a foregone conclusion by half time with five unanswered tries scored in the opening half to take a 33-0 lead. The second half started in similar fashion with another two tries in the first 10 minutes before Wellington put together a good spell of play to score two tries of their own.

In the new Jubilee Cup round format, Marist St Pats hosts third placed Oriental-Rongotai at Evans Bay Park next week. The winner of this match gets a second round bye and straight to semi finals, with the losing side getting a 'second chance' in the second round against the winner of the 6 vs 7 playoff. The playoff format is illustrated below.



Elsewhere, our Premier 2 had a gutsy win over Poneke in a match where the score seesawed between the sides, they won 32-27.

The Colts started strong and held a lead early in the second half before running out of steam, losing to OBU by 9-20. They won the fourth place tiebreaker and will travel to Petone for a semi final next weekend.

The Presidents beat Stokes Valley by 19-15 and will hold the President's Cup for the summer. The Internationals continued their strong run of form with a 24-17 win over Western Suburbs. Out in Upper Hutt the Under 85s lost to the Rams by 5-36.
