Colts get underway this weekend

Wellington Rugby has confirmed a new structure for the Under 21 'Colts' grade this season. Play gets underway this weekend with a 'preseason' knockout tournament to determine which grade clubs will play in for the season.

Marist St Pats will feature in division one for the knockout cup and will be looking to retain our position in that division when the first round Paris Memorial Trophy kicks off on 22 April.

Full grade structure explained here.

Numbers have been good for the Marist St Pats Colts and we are looking forward to fielding two competitive teams again this season - the second team will join division two following the knockout cup. We are probably in better shape numbers wise than this time last year, so very positive so far.

In terms of preparation, getting competitive matches has been a challenge. As coach Edwin Meachen explains, 'we had a great hit out against a very experienced Auckland Marist Colts side at Spillane Cup, creating a lot of excitement and encouragement for the season ahead both on and off the field. But other than that game, unfortunately two clubs cancelling preseason fixtures has been challenging for the Colts management and the players in keeping the momentum up.'

Despite those challenges the side has continued building slowly. With the new Wellington Rugby preseason initiative for the Colts Division starting this week, and a fixture against St Pats 1stXV on Sunday too, it will be great for our big squad to crank things up a notch from this Saturday on and off the field.
