Marist St Pats has made a return to the Women's competition in style with a resounding 66-7 win over a combined Johnsonville-Tawa team on Friday night. The occasion was significant as it is the first all-MSP women's side since 2011 and also a reward of the hard work the players and coaches have put in over the preseason.
Jumping out to a 29-0 half time lead under lights at Alex Moore Park, the side put the foot down in the second half. Standout performers on the scoresheet were fullback Jane Bryce who scored 21 points including three tries, and first five Tina Vaaua-Hamlin (pictured) who scored four tries of her own.
Co-coach Ryan Setefano said 'the goal last night was to enjoy and express themselves; for a lot of them it was the first time lacing up the boots. So for them it was about getting that first bit of contact in to release the nerves. We know it was a good first up win but there is still a lot of room for improvement. We'll take it week by week and continue as underdogs.'
