Valentine Meachen is set to make his debut for Wellington after being named in the Lions Mitre 10 Cup squad today. He will join fellow Marist St Pats players Isaac O'Connor, Vince Sakaria and Jeff To'omaga-Allen in the side.
This caps off an outstanding season for Valentine who played for Samoa A in March and will now follow in the footsteps of his father Tony Meachen who played at hooker for Wellington in the early 1980s.
Isaac and Vince will be looking to nail down regular minutes for the Lions last season following a very strong season at their respective positions in the club competition this year.
Coach Earl Va'a remarked to Club Rugby that “Guys like Valentine Meachen, Galu Taufale, Isaac O’Connor and Kane Leaupepe have impressed and forced our hand and that tells me that competition is in good health.”
The Lions preseason schedule has seen a Wellington XV post wins over Tasman and Manawatu in recent weeks with their final hit out against Canterbury in Christchurch tomorrow before the season opener against Hawke’s Bay in Napier on August 20.
