At their annual dinner last Thursday night, the St Patrick's College Rugby Club bestowed 'honorary membership' to three Marist St Pats and St Pat's College stalwarts.
'Tony Meachen is the only player to captain two clubs to the Jubilee Cup title: Athletic in 1977; and Marist St. Pats in 1984. In addition to coaching at Marist St. Pats and the College, Tony coached the Wellington Sevens team from 1994-1995 and from 1998-2006, winning the New Zealand title in 2002. In 2002 and 2003, he was Technical Advisor and Manager of the Manu Samoa National Sevens team and from 2004-2008, he was a New Zealand Sevens selector.
John Duignan (JD) has had a long coaching involvement with Marist St. Pat's, the College and Community Rugby through his role as Club Coaching Co-ordinator. Together with Tony Meachen, JD coached the 1XV to a famous away 19 points to 14 win against Wellington College in 2006. His role in identifying and developing talent was recognised in his appointment as Coach of the Wellington Development Team in 2010.
John Holden is the current Chairman of the Marist St. Pat's Rugby Club, the second time he's held this leadership role for one of Wellington's leading Clubs. A capable, experienced and value rugby administrator, John was recognised for his contribution by being awarded the W M O'Connor Memorial Cup in 2011, as MSP's Outstanding Club Member. John is the National Business Manager for the Society of Mary.
The Rugby Club congratulates Tony, John and John and thanks them for their ongoing contribution to Marist rugby in Wellington and for their continued support of the development of rugby at St. Patrick's College.'
