The appointment of Sean Horan on 16 January as the coach of the New Zealand women's sevens team marks the start of an exciting four years for women's rugby.
Men's and women's sevens will be played at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, and Sean's brief is to have the women's team as serious medal contenders. He will be casting a wide net to involve not just rugby players but any women athletes who want to bid for the Olympic side.
Sean has spent the last three years coaching the Bay of Plenty Steamers in the ITM Cup. His father, Kevin, is a life member of MSP and Sean played in several Jubilee Cup-winning MSP teams in the late 1990s.
He's New Zealand's first fulltime appointment to the women's sevens coaching role. Along with 14 regional resource coaches, he will be scouring the country this year for any women who want to be part of the development programme. SPARC and the NZRU are both investing to ensure New Zealand are serious medal contenders in four years' time.
MSP's women's player/coach Mere Wilson says it's a great opportunity for women rugby players and athletes, and she encourages anyone with an interest to go the NZRU website and register.
