Congratulations to Brendan Reidy and Ross Bond who have have been appointed coaches of Marist St Pats' premier side in 2013.
The pair will take over from the Jubilee Cup-winning duo of Clayton McMillan and Murray Tocker who, for a mixture of work and personal reasons, have stood down from their coaching roles.
For Brendan, it's a return to the fold after coaching the premiers in 2005,06 and 07. For the past five years, he's coached the St Pat's Town 1st XV. He also coached the NZ Marist colts and seniors in recent seasons, an experience that renewed his drive to coach men at the senior level, he says.
MSP had a highly successful 2012 but Brendan can still see areas to improve. 'The club has great systems in place and I'll just be trying to add to them. Offering a bit more on attack is one area to look at.'
Ross Bond, having observed MSP closely in recent seasons as coach of Poneke and Norths, also has some thoughts on how to crank up the Red Machine to another level. He was on the Evans Bay sidelines coaching the Norths team that was defeated 33-6 by MSP in this year's Jubilee Cup semi-final.
'That was one of the best forward performances I've seen in Wellington club rugby for many, many years. But I can also see huge untapped potential in the backline. There's a very exciting group of young guys.'
As a player, Ross was a premier first-five and fullback for Marist St Pats from 1985 to 1989, in teams that included All Blacks Brian McGrattan and John Schuster, and a Jubilee Cup win in 1988.
Brendan and Ross are full of enthusiasm for the job ahead, and over the summer will be getting to know the players and identifying areas to work on for what promises to be an exciting 2013.
