MSP had to settle for the Plate at the NZ Marist sevens at Evans Bay after being bundled out of the Cup section in the second day of play on 5 February.
After making their way through to the Cup quarter-finals, the team were hammered 41-7 by Hastings Marist in their first game on Saturday morning. In an error-ridden performance against a physical Hastings side, MSP could only manage a solitary try and conversion to Fa'atonu Fili.
That result consigned them to the Plate section, but they hit form with a 42-6 thrashing of Hamilton Marist to go into the Plate final against Hutt Old Boys Marist. In a tense match, Ryan Setefano and Aviata Sopo'aga scored tries for a 10-5 halftime lead, and that was the final result as a great defensive effort in the second half kept HOB Marist at bay.
The club's second team narrowly lost both their Saturday morning matches. On the Friday, MSP1 had lost 14-17 to Christchurch's Marist Albion who went on to win the Cup final against North Harbour Marist.
Fa'atonu Fili was selected for the NZ Marist sevens team that will travel to Fiji, and Isaia Petelo is a non-travelling reserve. The sevens season will conclude with the club's entry in the Ambassador Sevens at Trentham Memorial Park on 19 February.
