From the pen of Marist St Pats President, John Spillane...
Last weekend there was a lot of pre-season activity around the traps – we had the Internationals playing OBU, our Under 85s playing Eastbourne and Avalon, and the Colts playing St Pats College for the Xavier Reidy Memorial Cup.
The Premier Men/Premier Reserves had an extended training session / camp at the gym and the Women’s team had a comprehensive training and whiteboard session to prepare them for their title challenge.
Saturday morning saw the juniors doing their enrollments down at the gym and it was fantastic to see Victor Vito down there passing the ball around with the kids – that really is something that warms the heart.
The big pre-season spring cleaning at the Clubrooms was sorted and the bar was reopened.
We woke Richard from his offseason slumber to manage the after match for the Reidy family. This function allows the Club to honor the memory of Xavier Reidy as we host the St Pats College lads and their families after their game against our Colts team.
A number of our recent college leavers featured in this match. Last weekClub Rugby shared an overview of school leavers entering Wellington club rugby in 2025, including those from Marist St Pats, which you can read here.
This was once again a brilliant event. This annual match against the college has become such an important part of the MSP season and we are so grateful that Brendan and Paula allow us to share this day with their family.
So, as far as a dress rehearsal goes, it was a good one, and I can say with some certainty that the Red Machine is officially fired up and ready for the season ahead.
So, as we count down to Saturday, I am calling all MSP faithful to dig out their scarves, red jackets and sunglasses and get down to Evan Bay Park this weekend to support the teams.
The Colts kick off at Evans Bay Park at 1pm and the Premier play after that game. First up are our old mates Poneke, with the Horan – Millar trophy on the line.
And, as it is week one, we have a big night planned at the clubrooms this Saturday – starting straight after the premiers finish their game.
So please get along after the games and enjoy all that MSP has to offer – including a few burnt sausages and some dodgy meat patties as we fire up the monster BBQ on the deck to get the season underway.
