Marist St Pats Under 85kg Reds - Season Preview

Whitireia journalism student and MSP Under 85kg Greens stalwart Josh Price has caught up with the coaches ahead of the 2014 season.

The Reds see 2014 as a rebuilding year, due to the loss of a great coach and a key few players, says the team’s new coach Matt Collett. The side is aiming for finals footy, but are being level headed about their prospects. “We may end up in Division 2, but in either division the Reds will give it their all,” Mr Collett says.

The greatest challenge for the team will be coping with the loss of the team’s coach of 5 seasons Mark Witkowski. “Toski’ has been the gel of the team and the boys gave it all each week for him,” he says. He believes, however, that he and other senior players such as George McGranachan are ready to step and guide the Reds with pride this season

Player to watch out for?

“Jordan Wilson our number 8 and captain, he leads by example whether it’s on the field or being a gentleman off the field.

Games to get out and watch?

“The Blues and the Tawa Titans, always tough games, it’s always great to play a team from the same club whether it’s the Blues or the Greens.

What makes the team unique?

“We have the black mamba.”

2013 finish - sixth in Division One
