Whitireia journalism student and MSP Under 85kg Greens stalwart Josh Price has caught up with the coaches ahead of the 2014 season.
The ‘Cougar’ Greens are looking to clinch the elusive Division 3 title in the second round this year, says rookie coach Willy Donnelly.
“The Cougar Greens generally have a lot of fresh faces early in the season, and often have the challenge of rebuilding the team around a core group of players,” says Willy. “This means that the first round goals focus on building a foundation for the second half of the season,” he says.
Other than the fresh faces, Willy says the main challenges for the team is a new coaching staff, as well as dealing with the loss of injured 2013 captain, and players’ player Filip Dimitreivski. “He has been a real leader in the forward pack over the last few seasons.”
Off the field Willy says the Greens pride themselves on their social dynamic with a real focus in 2014 of getting the team to the clubrooms.

“Jordy Walsh, the former under-21 player was a key component in a backline that was potent when it fired last year.”
Games to get out and see?
“Petone, very little has separated these two teams over the past few years, and there have been some memorable games.”
“Avalon always provides heated and confrontational battles.”
