Taupo was the destination for the 2021 edition of the annual New Zealand Marist Preseason Tournament, the Spillane Cup. This year Marist St Pats sent a contingent of Colts and Senior players along with our Netball team.

All the action happened on Saturday with our Netball side getting underway at 9.30am. The side had a number of close matches but came out on the right side of the ledger with three wins from four games.

On the rugby field it was our Colts who kicked off first with their only match of the weekend, against hosts Taupo Marist. There are lots of new faces in this team as players from across Wellington and around the country form the side after a Covid affected hiatus in 2020. The result was a confidence boosting 26-5 win. Their next preseason match against St Patrick's College 1st XV on 27 March.

The afternoon saw a combined Senior team line up in the Ham Cumming Cup competition, having finished fourth in last years tournament. It turned out to be a cricket score beating Marist St Michaels from Rotorua by 101-7. Unfortunately North Harbour Marist defaulted the final the following day, but promotion back to the Spillane Cup draw next year was achieved.

Napier Old Boys Marist won the Spillane Cup after beating Hastings Rugby and Sports by 31-29 in the final.

On the Saturday night the tournament team was named on the first day's performances and included a number of Marist St Pats players. Tui Tuiatua, Andrew Wells and Isaia Petelo were named in the rugby tournament team while Frances Duffin and Chas TuMax were named in the netball tournament team.

After a successful trip away, the rugby teams come back together this weekend for a team building day. They wrap up preseason with a round of fixtures on Evans Bay Park on 27 March.
