Evans Bay Park was quieter than usual with games played in front of minimal spectators due to Covid-19 Level 2 restrictions. That didn't stop our Premier Men's and Women's sides as they both recorded big victories in the winter sun.
Our Premier Women played their final game of a truncated club season and finished on a high note with a 72-20 win over Poneke. The side led from start to finish after co-captain scored the opening try in the first few minutes. They finish the season with four wins and four losses.
In the Swindale Shield, our Premer Men took on Tawa in a clash that would be pivotal to both sides top four aspirations. Remember, the top four Swindale Shield sides will go straight to Jubilee Cup semi-finals due to the shortened season.
On their home track, the Premiers also led from start to finish with first half tries to James Proctor (2), James Tuiatua and Ryan Setefano. It was a lapse in our own 22 that kept Tawa close at half time, it was 28-17 at the break for oranges.
The second half was more of an arm-wrestle; Tawa spent more time in our 22 but couldn't capitalise on all their opportunities. The home side did take their own, but Tawa would strike back quickly after scoring. Despite this, Marist St Pats kept a fairly tight grip on the scoreboard throughout the half.
The win keeps our Premiers in third place on the Swindale Shield table, four points behind leaders Petone. They are set to travel over the road to Poneke next week before taking on Paremata-Plimmerton; Johnsonville and Wellington in the final rounds. We will keep you updated on Covid-19 restrictions throughout the week.
All other grades were cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions.
