Tom Martin and Andrew Wells to lead the Red Machine
Premier head coach Zak Feaunati is thrilled to announce Tom Martin as the Premier Captain for 2020; Tom will be supported by veteran Andrew Wells as his Vice Captain.
In selecting the pair to lead our Premiers, Zak has confidence that they bring the right qualities to lead the side in Marist St Pats' 50th year.
'They tick all the boxes for the attributes we need to be successful. They have a great attitude on and off the field and hold the respect of their peers. Not only are they quality rugby players, they are good club men with winners mentality who ultimately want the best for the club'.
The appointment of Tom in just his second Premier season is an indication of the maturity he already brings to the game.
He acknowledges the stature of being named captain of one of New Zealand's most iconic rugby clubs: 'Last year was an honour to be able to play and wear the jersey, so being asked to lead the team in 2020, further filled me with eagerness and excitement. I'm grateful to have been given this opportunity and to lead alongside such a special group of men.'
On leading the Premier side in the club's 50th year, 'I think it adds another layer to the pride of the job and to this year as whole. It's definitely added another string to our bow in terms of remembering why we play and those who played before us, and the importance of leaving our mark just as they did.'
Tom will be accompanied by one of the 'elder statesmen' in the team; at the age of just 27 Andrew Wells is set to play his 100th game this season after debuting for Marist St Pats in 2012 (and a few years in France along the way). His experience and poise will be valuable in leading an exciting backline that combines youthful potential with veterans.
'Being named one of the leaders for this season is a honour and a really exciting opportunity especially at the club which I have played all my rugby at and which means a lot to me.
We have a strong player group with a lot of leaders within the group which will make our job easier. I am just looking forward to getting on the field and hopefully leading by example in my play and in the way we expect things to be done off the field at Marist.'
Tom led the team for the first time in their 31-12 preseason win over Poneke last weekend.
