Our Premiers will be leaving Petone Rec with the Bill Elvy Memorial Trophy following an outstanding second half performance and a 50-22 win. In the early game our Premier Reserves remain unbeaten after overturning a 12-22 deficit to win 37-22.
In the Swindale Shield match our Premiers held firm in the first half despite Petone enjoying long periods with the ball, a late try saw us take a 10-0 lead into the half time break. At that point most spectators were expecting a similar arm wrestle in the second stanza - they were wrong!
An outstanding 65 metre effort from Isaia Petelo in the 42nd minute saw the visiting Red Machine quickly extend their lead and just minutes later fullback Andrew Wells carved through the defence from a similar distance to set up Joe Walding-Karaitiana to extend the lead to 24-0 (video of both tries below).
Further exchanges extended the lead to 38-7 before the game started to lose shape. A succession of yellow cards were handed out to our players allowing Petone to score another three tries.
This was the performance the coaches would have been looking for after a lack-lustre outing against Old Boys-University. Both sides return home to host Hutt Old Boys Marist at Evans Bay on Past Players and Supporters Day this Saturday.
