Perfect 'Old Timers Day'
With a large contingent of the players that paved the way for Marist St Pats in the 1970s in attendance, the current players delivered on the field on Past Players and Supporters Day. While a number of grades took a break for the long weekend, all four teams that did play won.
The days events kicked off at the clubrooms with a luncheon attended by about 150 past players and supporters where they were able to reconnect and share stories of old. A highlight was the announcement of a new interclub trophy, the 'Maurice Standish Cup', which will be played for between Marist St Pats and Northern United from next year.
As second rounds on the buffet commenced, down the hill the Premier Reserves were steamrolling their opposition jumping out to a 49-0 halftime lead over the Axemen. A highlight of the second half was when prop Steve Moli found himself with ball in hand 40 metres out and showed great pace to find the try line. The final score was 89-0.
Down the road at Evans Bay Park the Colts were taking on Upper Hutt Rams in the final round of the Paris Memorial Trophy. They jumped out to a 33-0 lead before letting in some consolation tries late in the game, final score 33-19.
The Premiers made fairly easy work of their Wellington counterparts despite playing the 20 minutes of the first half with 14 men. Jordy Walsh was a late addition to the starting lineup and scored two tries on his debut. In his first start of the season James Proctor had a commanding performance at first five.
Vince Sakaria was the man of the match with another outstanding all round performance and was rewarded with a try late in the match.
The Jubilee Cup round robin kicks off next week, the draw will be updated in the 'Fixtures and Results' section as soon as it's available.
