Veteran first five and Wellington legend Fa'atonu Fili played his 200th Wellington Premier rugby match yesterday afternoon and came away with a valuable win at Lyndhurst Park.
The Premiers will be pleased to open their Jubilee Cup campaign with a win, particularly on the road against a tough Tawa side. Coming up against a big pack, the Red Machine was buoyed by the inclusion of former All Blacks Victor Vito and Jeff To'omaga-Allen; but it was regular starters Vince Sakaria and Nick Harrison who were the big performers in the forwards. Vince was huge all over the park while Nick was a nuisance to the opposing lineout.
In a testament to the strong forward play, both Marist St Pats tries were scored up front, one to hooker Valentine Meachen and the other to Vito who was prominent in his 50 minutes on the park.
Following the match, there was a good crowd at the clubrooms to see Victor Vito presented his club blazer (video below) and listen to Victor speak about his time with MSP and the All Blacks. Stay tuned for video of that later in the week.
In other results, the Premier 2's fought a brave match against Petone's Premiers keeping them scoreless in the last 30 minutes once their Hurricanes went off. The Women made it two from two in the second round and the Colts A bounced back for a good win over HOBM.
