The 20th edition of the New Zealand Marist 7s tournament was an 'all red' affair after Marist St Pats won both the Men's and Women's Cup's at Wakefield Park this weekend. The annual tournament involves Marist affiliated clubs from around the country.
The women's competition wrapped up on day one with Marist St Pats coming from behind to snatch a 29-24 win over Hutt Old Boys Marist.
After a successful first day, the depth of quality players at MSP was evident with both our 'A' and 'B' mens teams having booked quarter final spots.
After each winning their quarter finals, the A's had a thrilling semi final match with Hutt Old Boys Marist that went right down to the line with conversions being the clincher in the 14-12 win. Meanwhile the B's scored early tries against Whakatane Marist to take an early lead which they never relinquished. Their 26-14 win set up an all Marist St Pats final.
The final was action packed from the outset with the A's (in red) scoring two early tries by standout players Michael Buckley and Ryan Setefano (highlights below). Another two tries saw the A's lead comfortably at half time and early second half tries all but clinched the match. But the B's (in white) still weren't going to rollover. With a good mix of experience and youth they scored two second half tries to narrow the margin, but it was still a comprehensive 51-10 win for the A's.
Thanks to New Zealand Marist for another great tournament which was a lot of fun for players and spectators who particularly enjoyed glorious sunshine on day two!
In a testament to the depth at the club, it was an all Marist St Pats final for the NZ Marist 7s Cup with the A's playing the B's! We thought you might enjoy some video highlights! #iBleedRED
