Most of us will have done volunteer work at some time during our career; whether it is as a member of Lions or Rotary, a children’s sports coach or fundraising for a not-for-profit organisation. Such work for the greater good of communities (such as the promotion of sport, and in particular New Zealand’s national game of rugby, should be included in an individuals CV!
Volunteer work for Marist St Pats is therefore very important! Not just for the community but also is valued by employers – it demonstrates commitment. New Zealand has been practically founded on the backs of volunteers working at all levels of the community – it has been estimated that New Zealanders spend more than 250 million hours a year in volunteer work, worth more than $2 billion.
People generally do volunteer work in area’s that they are passionate about that use their great talents that use their strengths and often produce great results and achievements. Volunteer work also gives people the opportunity to use skills, especially leadership skills, that they may not get to use in paid employment. By demonstrating skills gained in voluntary work people have the opportunity to apply for paid roles that use these skills.
Putting your voluntary experience to work with Marist St Pats helps to identify additional transferable skills and will increase your confidence in your worth to present or future employers, particularly if you planning on returning to the work force.
