Bernie Upton has come full circle at MSP. Back to where it all began 14 years ago with Tony Meachen in the Senior 1s. Bernie hung up his boots after winning the Jubilee Cup last year but has returned to the field to join Tony Meachen and Mark Bradshaw on the sidelines coaching the young side.
The team has had a mixed season with injuries affecting both Senior 1 and Premier sides. Sublime some weeks, others tough going. Bernie notes 'there's a big group of guys playing a grade higher than they did last year and that is a challenge for those players and the coaches involved.'
The coaching team know the importance of the Senior 1 team to the success of the club's top sides and the expectations are always present, 'MSP is a club that has come to expect a high level of results, but reality is we're not automatically entitled to win just by wearing a red jersey.'
Having played at the top level, Bernie knows what it takes to win and is optimistic about the final four rounds of the season, 'we are capable of winning all of our remaining games but it will require all the guys turning up to training and playing with courage and skill. I believe if this happens we can expect to achieve success in our remaining games.'
Senior 1s play Tawa in Round Six of the Ed Chaney Cup on Saturday at Evans Bay, kick off 1.15pm.
