MSP's facilities will get a huge boost from the construction of a new artificial ground at Evans Bay.
The Wellington City Council voted on 16 February to pay half the cost, up to a total of $800,000, of a new artificial field at St Pat's College. The field will run parallel to Cobham Drive, at right angles to the MSP gym, replacing the current college field and part of the school tennis courts.
The new field, which will be full IRB size, will be used for college and club rugby and football games, and could be in use for the 2013 season. It adds to the artificial surfaces now in use at Te Whaea in Newtown, Wakefield Park in Island Bay, and Nairnville Park in Khandallah.
Another artificial surface is due to open at Wellington College next month, and one has been built at the Boyd Wilson field in Kelburn for Victoria University and the Old Boys University rugby club.
Marist St Pats and St Pats College are now in talks about funding and shared use of the facility. The current grounds are heavily used and often closed during winter. The school and the club are delighted with the council's decision and the boost it will give to junior, college and club sport.
