Premier Women back for 2025

Our Premier Women are back after a year on hiatus with a fresh group that brings together new and familiar faces.

The last time our Women took the field was in a historic final that saw them as champions of Wellington Rugby for the first time in club history. After a year off with significant player movement and retirements, the new look group will look to forge their own path and own identity.

The coaching and management team, led by head coach Tinkah Tolova'a, have reflected on the preseason together and shared some thoughts heading into the new season.

'After a year on hiatus, our offseason preparations have been both challenging and rewarding. We began our preseason with 7s, using it as a platform to steadily build our numbers. Although the offseason started off slow in terms of recruitment, we saw consistent growth following Christmas. Teaching new players and helping returning players reacquaint themselves with the game has been a challenge, but it's one we've embraced. Thanks to these efforts, we're now in a good position and feeling optimistic about the season ahead.'

The team held a team building day last weekend in which they discussed and agreed some goals for the season. 'It was a great opportunity to come together and focus on what we want to achieve. While we know the season will present its challenges, we’re optimistic about our journey. With a strong sense of purpose and teamwork, we see this season shaping up to be a positive one.'

In terms of on field leadership, the team has named Paige Va'auli and Liza de Wild has their co-captains. Both were prominent in the 2023 season and with vast playing experience and knowledge between them, will be great leaders to the playing group. The coaching group have seen them lead by example and provide invaluable guidance which will help the team succeed.

As a re-formed squad, the coaching team are excited to see their squad come together on the field when they take on perrenial contenders Oriental-Rongotai at Polo Ground this Saturday.

'Our team is made up of a diverse group of players, each bringing their own unique strengths. Among them, we have current students, recent school leavers, experienced players returning to the field, overseas players, and even those who are entirely new to the game. Each player’s contribution is invaluable, and together, they create an exciting and promising dynamic for the season.'
