President's Monday Musings
From the pen of Marist St Pats' President, John Spillane...
Ironically, even though the rugby season ended two months ago, the Club is currently in its busiest phase of the year. Rather than kicking back and relaxing as the seasons change and the weather improves, the committee, coaches, managers, and many dedicated volunteers are hard at work, recruiting, planning, and laying the groundwork for a big 2025 season.
I've had the pleasure of observing the efforts of this incredible team, and I can confidently say that every effort is being made to retain the talent we loved watching throughout the 2024 season, while also recruiting new players, coaches, managers, and committee members to the Red Machine.
Feedback from our frontline recruiters indicates that many players—whether they are school leavers, newcomers to Wellington for work or study, or those transferring from other clubs—want to join Marist St Pats. They’ve been engaging with us on social media, talking to current players, and seeing all the fantastic things the Club does for its members, which has sparked their desire to be a part of it.
From what I see, we can all be optimistic that the project initiated by Sean and the team leading into the 2024 season will continue to develop, ensuring the Red Machine builds on the successes we achieved this year. I’m cautiously optimistic that we’re setting ourselves up for a strong showing across all grades in 2025.
While growing our player base is crucial, we’re equally focused on expanding the Red Machine’s membership base. This involves transforming “supporters” into “members.” We want to convert our large supporter base into an engaged community of members who actively participate in the Club’s success in 2025 and beyond.
So, I extend a warm invitation to all those who have played for the Club, follow us on social media, enjoy our live streams, or come to watch our teams play: please consider becoming a member!

On this subject – I’d like to invite you all to a Club night, up at the clubrooms on Friday 1 November (starting at 6pm).
This is a great opportunity to meet our coaches and managers and to learn more about our plans for the season ahead.
We'll have a BBQ running – so that’s dinner sorted, and it will be a relaxed and informative evening amongst friends.
This is an event for all of our club community; we would love to see you all at the clubrooms.
