Greens look for strong finish to the season

Josh Price updates the fortunes of the Under 85kg 'Cougar' Greens as they enter the second round...

The MSP ‘Cougar’ Greens start their second round knowing they would be disappointed if they didn’t make the semi-finals. The Greens will play in the competitions highly competitive third division.

Head Coach Willy Donnelly says the main goal is to play good rugby as there has been a shift in the quality of rugby.

“There has been a noticeable shift in the quality of rugby being played.” Mr Donnelly says.

“There are no easy wins and every w counts.”

The first round was a testing one, it saw the team struck by injury, most noticeably captain and front rower Ross Shapley to a broken leg, and illness.

“This meant the Cougars were on the wrong side of the ledger in a few tight matches.” Willy says.

Dave Rees has been the star player in the first round, and Willy believes his leadership in the front row will be crucial in round 2.

Despite their difficult start Willy said it’s not all bad, new winger and youngster known only as ‘Angus’ has turned out to be a great person, Josh’s shoulder hasn’t fallen off and Sam O has been far more committed to the team than he expected.

The Greens play Friday night at 8pm against Wests at Te Whaea.
