U85 Blues feature in Auckland tournament win

Nine MSP players from the champion under-85 Blues were in the starting Wellington team that won the Barbarians Middleweight tournament in Auckland on the weekend of 15 and 16 September.

The Wellington Centurions team never conceded a try in defeating official representative sides from Auckland 20-3; Waikato 20-3; Thames Valley B (open weight) 20-0; and North Harbour 29-6.

Ten Blues players in all were in the Wellington side, with three others selected but unavailable. No 8 Mark Rumble was a late withdrawal because of injury. Blues captain David Rice and vice-captain Pat Houghton were later named in the tournament team.
