MSP's under-85 Reds (opposite) took out the division 2 title on 13 August, battling to a 7-0 win over top qualifiers Poneke Cavaliers in the final on Kilbirnie Park.
The division 3 final featured the under-85 Greens who have made great strides during the season. However, they couldn't quite get over the finish line, losing 17-20 to HOB Marist.
In other results, the senior 1s and 2s both had narrow semi-final losses. The senior 1s went down 29-32 to top qualifiers Petone, while the senior 2s went down 25-26 to Wellington, a late penalty proving the difference.
The under-85 Reds' win was built on a superb defensive effort, with the Poneke side having all the territory in the first half. They were held up over the line twice and missed two penalties for a 0-0 scoreline at the break.
MSP had much the better of the second half, the match-winning moment coming after 20 minutes. Fullback Jackson Dalton retrived a high ball near halfway, cut across field and threw a superb wide pass to winger Tim McBride. He showed great pace to burn down the touchline and outstrip four Poneke defenders before cutting infield and scoring handy to the posts. In his first year playing rugby, Tim then converted his own try.
Poneke tried everything to get back into the game, but led by an outstanding loose forward trio in captain Matt McGranachan, No 8 Matt Comery and No 6 Liam Martin, the Reds were determined to stay in front. They finished the game well on top, a great outcome for coaches Mark Witkowski, Chris Desmond, and player-coach Matt 'Tiff' Smith.
