Round Five win keeps semi final hopes alive

The Premiers have kept their Jubilee Cup final hopes alive with a win over Wainui that showed patience and perseverance. Playing into a strong northerly at William Jones Park, the team defended for the first half hour as the big Wainui forwards looked to assert some dominance. By half time the ground looked like a mudbath and the team found themselves down 3-12.

The increasing maturity of this young side was evident as they played smart rugby in the conditions plugging the corners and keeping the ball tight. It didn't take long to be rewarded with No. 8 Pago Haini crossing five minutes in and replacement wing Julian Tupai dotting down midway through the half to take a lead they would never relinquish. The final ten minutes were spent defending and the scrum, including Johnathan Hopgood in his 100th match, came up big to deny Wainui in front of their supporters.

The penultimate round robin match is against Swindale Shield winners Tawa next week at Evans Bay.
