After months of training and preparation the Swindale Shield started with a Gala Day at Trentham Memorial Park yesterday.
Running out against a familiar looking Johnsonville side, the first half took some time to take shape as both teams looked to settle into the new season. After a strong first 10 minutes from Johnsonville, our forwards started to take control with the frustrated Hawks giving away a number of kick-able penalties which Fa'atonu Fili duly knocked over.
Long periods with the ball eventually saw the Isaia Petelo dot down soon before halftime after the forwards mauled 20 metres from a lineup. At half time the Red Machine led the Hawks 16-3.
The second half opened up quickly as our backline found plenty of wide open spaces to run through as our opponents tired. Tries were scored by Valentine Meachen, Vince Sakaria, Julian Tupai, Andrew Wells and Peter Sciascia who came off the bench midway through the half. The game was somewhat summarised in the final play of the match where replacement hooker Sefo Setefano converted Wells' try. Final score was 52-8.
With a win under their belts our Premiers return home next week to host Avalon at 2.30pm.
