Teams primed for Ambassadors Sevens

After weeks of training our teams are ready to get stuck in at this weekend's American Ambassador's Sevens to be held at Mary Crowther Park in Wainuiomata. The one day tournament is the biggest prize in Wellington Club Sevens.

This summer our Men's team are being mentored by veteran player Fa'atonu Fili. An experience leader on the field he has enjoyed working on getting the team prepared from the sideline. He is very pleased with how the team has been working and notes some big improvements from a number of players.

'The numbers have been a feature of the training; I think on the success of last season's sevens team, who won the New Zealand Marist National Sevens, the word has gotten around that the culture and standards we set at training as well as off the field are very high.'

Like many good sides the squad for Saturday will feature a mix of exciting young players and experienced Sevens campaigners. The team will be led by former New Zealand Under 20s and Wellington representative Sevens player Matt Peni (right).

'I think we have the right mix of experience and youth as well as power and speed. The skill aspect has been a real work on for the boys but its a helluva lot better than when we first started. For me newcomers Joe Walding-Karaitiana and Ivan Fepulea'i have looked the goods especially Joe with his leadership - he's always near the front in our fitness blocks. In our backs two guys who have also led from the front and two of our fittest guys are Luke Donaldson and Ryan Saunders. I'm keen to unleash them this weekend.'

Our Women's team are also very keen to build on the success of last summer which saw them win a number of tournaments, also including the New Zealand Marist National Sevens.

The team is again being coached by Premier centurion Ryan Setefano. The side has been training hard alongside our Men and had their first competitive hit out last weekend.

Featuring a number of players from the St Mary's College team that won the Condor Sevens qualifying tournament last week, the team is yet to be confirmed for the weekend.
