Wellington sports fields dry up

The Wellington Rugby Football Union met on Tuesday with various local councils and other winter sports codes to discuss the condition of the fields due to the current drought. The following update has been given by the WRFU:

'Junior and senior preseason training and games for winter sports codes has been banned from using all grass sports fields in the Wellington regionuntil further notice. This includes grass training areas in Wellington, Lower Hutt and Porirua... The various city Councils indicated their primary concerns were around player safety due to the hard grounds, the dry condition of fields with not much grass cover, and the inability to irrigate fields under the terms of the current outdoor water ban.'

'Postponing the start of the season is not currently being considered. However, there is likely to be a restricted or staggered start. At this stage we are planning to continue with a April 1 start for Premier, Senior 1 and Senior 2 competition, however be aware there may well likely be changes to grounds once the situation is reassessed closer to the time. What is being considered is a 50 percent reduction on natural field usage.'

Marist St Pats' preseason preparations will continue in the lead up to the 2013 season, making use of our facilities at Evans Bay. We will keep players and supporters informed with any updates that come to hand. Be sure to check our website and Facebook page regularly.
