New faces join the Red Machine

Winning a Jubilee Cup often results in a changing of the guard as experienced players move on. This is no different as the Premier team assembles in 2013.  Whilst many of the Jubilee Cup winning players will return to defend their title, incoming coaches Brendan Reidy and Ross Bond are also tasked with integrating a fresh mix of players. A mix that sees the coaches optimistic about the teams fortunes. Brendan, who is no stranger to the role having coached the Premiers from 2005-07, is pleased with the spirit of the group saying 'there have been over 40 players across the top teams who have been putting in the hard yards at training week in, week out and there is a good feeling amongst the group'.

Whilst noting preparation has been challenging at times, Brendan believes the team is on the right track. He is confident in the side that will run out against Old Boys-University on 1 April and expects the forward oriented team to play to their strengths and establish a platform for some classy players in the backline. These players could include fullback/wing Jackson Martin who returns to his beloved club from overseas, along with new outside backs Wanganui Heartland Championship rep Sam Scown and Lagen Kumeroa from Tukapa club in Taranaki.

Joining these new backs will be some fresh faces in the engine room, notably two new props, 2012 New Zealand Schools rep Vince Sakaria and Bryce Blair from North Harbour, who will help form the contingent tasked with filling the boots of Super Rugby players Jeff Toomaga-Allen and Solomona Sakalia. Rounding out notable additions to the forward pack is blockbusting No. 8 Pago Leota who joins the club from OBU.

The team to play the opening Swindale Shield match will be announced later in the week, the coaches and players are looking forward to receiving the full support of the Evans Bay faithful.

While it is an exciting time for MSP as we look to build on the success of last years teams; the club would also like to acknowledge the contributions of a number of veteran players who have either retired or moved overseas. Your passion and commitment to Marist St Pats over the years has been invaluable, we know what colour your blood is!
