Work on artificial turf begins in October

A pre-season match on the St Pat's field which will have an artificial surface for 2013.

Work on the new artificial sports field at St Pats is due to start in October, with a scheduled completion date in April so that it can be used for the 2013 season. The Wellington City Council will pay up to $800,000 for the facility, with the college and MSP covering the rest.

At one stage the field was planned to run parallel to Cobham Drive and to take in part of the St Pat's tennis courts. However, the latest plans see the new surface in the same place as the current field, at right angles to the gym. Surprisingly, the field is slightly larger than the main Evans Bay Park. It is 97m from goal line to goal line and 68m across, compared to 96m x 66m for the Evans Bay field.

Artificial fields around the city at Te Whaea, Wakefield Park and Nairnville Park are giving a big boost to winter sport and are well used for games and trainings. By taking pressure off grass surfaces, they are also contributing to far fewer cancellations.

The facility promises to be a great asset for the many college and MSP senior and junior teams based at Evans Bay.
