Inaugural club captain sends best wishes

Denis McColl, MSP's first club captain following the 1971 amalgamation, sends his best wishes on the club's 40th anniversary. Now living in Australia, he writes:

Very hearty congratulations on the occasion of the Ruby anniversary of the club's establishment.

As Ron Evans has so aptly written in his Leap of Faith article, the amalgamation was brought together so successfully simply because all involved in the process 'foresaw the value of a merger, not because we needed to'.

The club's positive impact on the social, spiritual, sporting and economic wealth of Wellington city, province and New Zealand rugby has been immense. I am very proud to be able to say I was a part of that beginning.

Thinking of all the great friendships formed over my years with St Pats Old Boys and Marist St Pats, I wish you all a great weekend as I know only too well you fellas can enjoy, and say 'gidday' to those who remember one of the originals.

Best regards to all

Denis McColl
