Our Development Squad has returned from a successful tour of Sydney that saw some great rugby played and relationships forged off the field.
The first match was on the Thursday against a strong Sydney University side. Played over three 40 minute periods the touring side had a great test that saw them win two of those three periods and the overall fixture 29-10.
It was encouraging to see the school leavers in the squad step up in this game, including outside back Francis Mettrick score two tries.
The second match day was held on the Sunday Morning with two 40 minute periods against Northern Suburbs and Manly respectively. Feeling the effects of the heat and a busy week, this was a big challenge for the team. They came from behind to beat Norths by 17-14 but couldn't back it up against a fresh Manly side, falling by 5-15.
Our side enjoyed support from Marist St Pats supporters at both matches, it was great to reconnect with former players and supporters now based in Sydney.
Off the field, one of the goals of the tour was to build relationships amongst the playing group. The side featured a great mix of players with Colts and Premier experience along with five school leavers. The Management Team included representation across those sides and the Internationals. Seeing the group come together was a highlight of the tour and will strengthen bonds across the grades this year and into the future.
The team enjoyed visits to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, Bondi Beach, Manly and savoured the experience of visiting a global city and all it had to offer.
On behalf of the touring squad, we would like to thank all who supported our fundraising efforts - particularly our major sponsors Mahony Horner Lawyers, Higgins Concrete, Coolmoves, and the Shamrock Club. We also want to acknowledge Tour Managers Rob Evans and Lourdaiz Ah Chong for the hours of planning and preparation that made the tour such a great experience.
