Ray Smith - Rest In Peace - a Marist man!

The Marist St Pats family is saddened to share news of the passing of Ray Smith, in Wellington. We offer the Club’s sincerest condolences to the extended Smith family.

Ray was the Clubs President in 1989 and Chairman of the Clubs Management Committee during the 1990-1991 period. Ray was also the Clubs Secretary in 1990. Prior to this Ray also served Marist St Pats on the Club’s Management Committee in 1983. Ray was also the President of the WRFU in 1992.

But it was in his contribution to NZ Marist that Ray served Marist rugby throughout New Zealand. Ray was voted Chairman of NZ Marist in 1973, a position he held for a staggering 45 years. During his time at the top of NZ Marist Ray was a passionate advocate for Marist rugby and attended pretty much every Spillane tournament during that time, organising funding and assisting Marist clubs all over the country.

The Club and NZ Marist Rugby has been very grateful for that contribution and for Ray’s contribution to Rugby Union, throughout New Zealand.

We trust that the knowledge that the extended Smith family are in the thoughts and prayers of so many Marist St Pat’s players and supporters will be of comfort at this time.

Funeral details to be advised.
