Our Premiers basked in the autumn sun with a big win over Northern United to open their Swindale Shield campaign.
Scoring quickly through a try to Iosefo Aukusitino, the side never looked back with three more first half tries (including a second to Aukusitino) to take a 26-10 lead into the break.
Norths struck back early in the second half, but that was the last time they would trouble the scorers. Two second half tries to winger Shane Thompstone and another to debutant Rique Miln ensured the visitors would head back to the city with their mission accomplished.
Earlier on Jerry Collins Stadium, our Colts fought out a close battle with a dynamic Norths side. All square at 10-10 at the half time break via tries to prop Jack Marshall and winger Viliame Saukuru, it would be the visiting side who would break the deadlock via a try to Baker Christie. After Norths returned the favour, a try to hooker Troy Gray followed by a successful conversion proved the decisive moment. Despite Norths scoring again late, a missed conversion saw the boys in red take a 22-20 victory.
On the top fields of Porirua Park, the Premier Reserves fell to Norths (score TBC) and the Presidents went down to Stokes Valley by 5-49. On the other side of the city, the Under 85s had a 3-22 loss to Eastbourne. The Internationals had a first round bye.
Most of our teams will enjoy their first home games of the season next weekend, followed by Pasifika Night at the clubrooms. We would love to see you there!
