Tough opening round for Premier sides

Our Premier sides will be looking to make some adjustments at training this week after  losses in their season opening matches. On the flipside, the Colts and Internationals kicked off their season with victories.

Our Premier Women got the day underway with their return to the competition after a year on hiatus. With a number of new faces in the side, the team will take heart in a very competitive performance against perennial contenders Oriental-Rongotai, ultimately going down by 24-34.

At home, a good crowd turned out to see the matches against our neighbours played in great conditions.

The Colts turned in a strong performance and led from start to finish, beating Poneke by 31-17. Over the road the Premier 2 Men had a tougher day, losing a competitive match by 32-43.

In the Swindale Shield opener, our Premier Men found themselves immediately facing a tough afternoon after losing debutant halfback Jayde Burns to a red card in the fourth minute. With his leg being held by an opposing player, Burns kicked his leg free, earning disciplinary action from the referee.

Losing the halfback early, led to a reshuffled backline for the next 20 minutes (new rules allowed replacement halfback Max Reynolds to replace Burns after 20 minutes) and the team never really recovered from the change in plans.

The game deciding moment possibly came minutes from halftime when only trailing by 0-7, our side found themselves guilty of lack of attention after a penalty which was then taken quickly and Poneke extended their lead to 0-14.

An early second half try to the returned Tui Tuiatua wasn't enough to spark the Red Machine back into life and the team when down by 10-24.

Elsewhere, the Internationals traveled to Porirua and continued where they left off in 2024 - winning. They beat Northern United by 58-12.

No result has been received from the Presidents. The Under 85s had a bye.
